CNN’S AFRICAN VOICES TAKES VIEWERS THROUGH NAIROBI WITH MAINA KAGENI
CNN’s African Voices: My Drive has featured veteran Kenyan broadcaster Maina Kageni in a special episode that takes viewers through Nairobi while reflecting on his nearly three decades in broadcasting.
The episode, hosted by Lamide Akintobi, revisits memorable conversations from the My Drive digital series, including a Nairobi feature in which journalist Larry Madowo joins Kageni for a drive through the city.

During the conversation, Kageni reflects on his long career in radio and what has helped him remain relevant in an industry that continues to change.
“The day I wake up and I feel like I’m going for a job is the day I’ll quit,” Kageni tells Madowo, describing his approach to a career that has seen him co-host one of Kenya’s most successful breakfast radio shows for more than two decades.
Kageni also speaks about adapting to changing audiences, particularly younger listeners.
“We have to change our attitudes literally every three years or so. Otherwise, it will become irrelevant,” he says.
Beyond broadcasting, the Nairobi drive touches on Kageni’s well-known passion for luxury cars, with the veteran presenter specifically naming the BMW X6 as his favourite.
Towards the end of the conversation, Kageni offers advice to aspiring entertainers and broadcasters, stressing the importance of consistency, dedication and having a distinctive talent.
“You’ve got to have a talent. There’s got to be something you’re going to be doing that is second to none,” he says.
The Nairobi feature forms part of a broader African Voices: My Drive special that revisits conversations with personalities including Rick Ross, Spyro, Kah-Lo, Falana and Chella.
The programme aired on CNN International on September 8, 2026, with additional broadcasts scheduled throughout September 12 to 14.
